Chikmagalur and Baba Budangiri, Karnataka

Often considered the birthplace of Indian coffee, Chikmagalur remains one of the country’s most celebrated coffee regions. Estates located near the slopes of Mullayanagiri, Karnataka’s highest peak, grow specialty Arabica at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 1,700 meters.

These higher-altitude farms often produce lower yields, but the resulting coffees can deliver remarkable depth, sweetness, and balance.

States such as Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh are emerging as exciting coffee-growing destinations. Smallholder farmers in these regions cultivate coffee at elevations ranging from 1,000 to nearly 2,000 meters.

Although coffee production in Northeast India remains relatively young compared to the Western Ghats, the combination of altitude, climate, and biodiversity has attracted growing attention from specialty coffee buyers and roasters.
